Assistant Professor

Email: seda@utk.edu

Shigetoshi Eda is Research Assistant Professor in The Center for Wildlife Health in the Department of Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries at the University of Tennessee Knoxville.  He received Ph.D. degree from Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Science (Japan) in 1997.  After working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California Riverside and as Research Associate at Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Science, he joined the Department of FWF in 2003.  His research has focused on the roles of cell surface molecules in immunological reactions.

He is currently studying immunological reactions of cattle against surface molecules of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), the causative agent of Johne’s disease in livestock and wild animals.  He found, with Dr. C.A. Speer, Cathy Scott, and other lab members, that cattle with Johne’s disease produced antibodies against surface antigens of MAP at early and late stages of the disease (1).  Further, calves experimentally infected with MAP also produced antibodies against the surface of MAP whereas calves infected with other mycobacteria did not (1).  Based on these findings, highly sensitive and specific diagnostic method for Johne’s disease was developed (2) and will be applied to study the prevalence of Johne’s disease (i.e. MAP infections) in wild as well as livestock animals.

He contributes to courses in the Wildlife Health curriculum, including co-teaching WFS 101/201 in 2005 and WFS 301 in Fall 2006.
